A Brief History Of The Association
The association was founded in 1937 under the name of Worcestershire Association of Professional Golfers, with the name being changed to its current form in 1997.
The following members formed the first committee : E. Cawsey, W. R. Firkins, C. Hobley, K. Hooker, F. Larke, H. E. Lewis, L. Matthews, H. Nash & A. R Wheildon.
S. W. Green was appointed Secretary, and Guy Bigwood accepted the position of President.
Due to the onset of World War II the association went into an enforced hibernation and became active again at the end of 1947.
R. W. Drinkwater was responsible for the introduction of the Sponsorship Scheme during his term of Presidency (1978 & 1979). The aim of which was to provide a pension scheme for the Worcester Professionals, the first county association to do so. Unfortunately, due to the rising costs, the pension scheme was discontinued at the end of 1997. All recipients of the scheme were notified and it was left to them to decide what they wished to do with the funds deposited in their individual policies. No funds whatsoever were retained by the Association. As a point of interest, the following long serving members of the Association are noted, together with the date and classification on joining.
Bernard Preston and Arthur Ashford (Assistants) 1938 Frank Miller (Ass) 1947, Keith Jones (Ass) 1952, Bill Firkins (Ass) 1957 Nick Underwood (Ass) 1958, John Wiggett (Pro) 1960, David Owen (Pro) 1961 Frank Powell (Pro) 1962 and Ron Moses (Pro) 1963
